What have you done, Fela?

If you’re a fan of African music, you’ve probably heard of Afrobeat. This funky and infectious genre, pioneered by Nigerian musician Fela Kuti in the 1970s, has had a huge impact on the modern African music scene. From the groovy beats to the politically charged lyrics, Afrobeat is a genre that never fails to get people moving.

Today, Afrobeat has branched out into numerous sub-genres, including Afro-fusion, Afropop, and Afro-house. These sub-genres incorporate elements of Western music, electronic dance music, and other genres to create a sound that’s uniquely African yet modern at the same time.

One of the most exciting things about Afrobeat is the number of talented rising female artists in the genre. From the soulful and powerful vocals of Yemi Alade to the dynamic and energetic performances of Niniola, these women are paving the way for the next generation of Afrobeat musicians. Other rising stars to keep an eye on include Tems, Tiwa Savage, and Teni.

Of course, the men of Afrobeat are no slouches either. Burna Boy has become a household name thanks to his infectious blend of Afrobeat and dancehall, while Mr Eazi’s smooth vocals and laid-back beats have won him fans around the world. Other talented male artists in the genre include Wizkid, Davido, and Rema.

But Afrobeat isn’t just about solo artists. There are also some incredible bands in the genre that are worth checking out. For example, Ghana’s legendary highlife band, the Osibisa, has been making music since the 1970s and is still going strong today. Other exciting bands include Femi Kuti & the Positive Force, Amadou & Mariam, and the South African group BCUC.

So, whether you’re a die-hard Afrobeat fan or just dipping your toes into the genre, there’s no denying the impact that it’s had on the modern African music scene. From the sub-genres to the rising stars, Afrobeat is a force to be reckoned with.
